The Sub-Department of Comparative Literature is part of the Department of European and Comparative Literature and Language Studies. Comparative literature researches the interrelationships between individual (national) literatures as well as between literature and other arts and media, general literary phenomena (forms, content) and overarching processes (translation, reception).

We are looking for two University assistants (predoctoral). 

Your field of activity:

As a University Assistant Praedoc, you will support the university professors in Comparative Literature (Univ.Prof. Dr Achim Hölter; Assoz.Prof. Dr Paula Wojcik) in the areas of research, administration and teaching.

Your future tasks:

You will be actively involved in research, teaching and administration:

  • You will take on a doctoral project to be proposed by you, in line with the department's areas of specialisation. You are expected to conclude a dissertation agreement within 12 months.
  • You will work on research projects, publications, initiatives and events organised by the department.
  • You will be involved in the organisation of conferences.
  • You will teach courses independently from the 2nd year of employment at the latest, in accordance with the provisions of the collective agreement.
  • You will be involved in the administration of the sub-department, in teaching and research.

Your profile:

  • Completed studies (Diploma, Mag.phil., MA, MPhil, or comparable degree) in the field of comparative literature
  • Thorough knowledge of the theory and practice of the main areas of comparative literature
  • Familiarity with the department's areas of specialisation
  • High level of written and oral fluency in German
  • Very good written and spoken English
  • Computer skills
  • Ability to work in a team, organisational skills, reliability and thoroughness

Additional skills:

  • Teaching experience and experience with e-learning
  • Knowledge of university procedures and structures
  • Advanced level of other languages relevant to international literary history
